♣〖The meaning and merit of offering incense〗♣
In Buddhism, incense or mention of the effects and merits of incense can often be used, whether it is offerings to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, or in metaphors of preaching.Incense as an important offering is closely related to Buddhism. It is of great significance and merit to offering incense to Buddha or to offer offerings to scriptures.
In the Susidhikara Sutra, five offerings are discussed for offering to the deity by applying incense, garland, burning incense, meals and lamps. Incense is listed as five offerings in this sutra.Burning incense is also an important offering in Tantric Buddhism. It is combined with six offerings, including chanting, scented incense, lanterns, and diet.In the Zen forest, burning incense is called burning incense or incense sticking. Those who hold incense boxes in the Dharma Assembly are called incense burners.
Volume 8 of the Great Sun Sutra records that burning incense means to reach the Dharma Realm. Just like when the tree king in the sky blooms, the fragrance will naturally spread with the wind and the wind. It is also like a merit burned by the fire of wisdom to be free from the windWhat you blow can be used to infrequently.Volume 2 of the "Chang Agama Sutra" records that lay people set up halls, renovate the premises, and sprinkle and burn incense.Volume 2 of the "Amitabha Sutra" also records that practitioners should hang silk, burn lamps, scatter flowers and burn incense, and dedicate this to wish to be reborn in the Pure Land.
In Tantric Dharma, compared with the pill incense symbolizing the afflictions of the total collection, the scattered incense is used to disperse and fragments to represent subtle afflictions. When practicing the Dharma, it is thrown into a furnace and burned for offering.Unlike burning incense and applying incense, as the Lotus Sutra: Devadatta Chapter says: "The fragrance of miscellaneous flowers is filled with the fragrance of miscellaneous flowers... to offer to the Seven Treasures Pagoda."
Throughout history, Buddhist temples often poured Buddha statues with incense soup on the birthday of the Buddha on April 8th every year, which is based on what is said above. In addition, the fragrant soup commonly called Zen Buddhism is made by decocting with tangerine peel, poria, rehmannia peel, cinnamon, angelica, citrus aurantium, licorice and other medicines, also known as Qixiang Tang.
In addition to being used as a special offering, because the fragrance of fragrance is far away, the scriptures are also often used to describe the virtues of practitioners in keeping precepts. For example, in the "Summit of Shurangama Sutra", "Soul of Fragrance" is used to describe the person who recites the Buddha's name as a person who dyes the scent of merit, just as the person who makes incense dyes the scent of fragrance.
The Pure Land of Incense is also recorded in the scriptures. For example, the "incense accumulates the country" mentioned in the Vimalakirti Sutra. It not only uses incense to form clothing, food, housing, and travel, but also uses incense to describe the method. In the "Avatamsaka Sutra", it is also said that the Huazang world is surrounded by countless seas of perfumes.Among the various practices of Tantric Buddhism, records of offering incense are often seen, and various different incenses are offered to the worldly sages such as the Buddha's, Lotus, Vajra's, and even the Eight Divine Tribes of the Heavenly Dragons and Dragons are used to offer them to correspond to them.
In addition, the scriptures also record the practice of incense.Among them is the Xiangyan boy in the "Lingyun Sutra", who smells the fragrance of sinking water and observes the impermanence of the fragrance and enters and leaves the impermanence and realizes the original heart of people.
Incense represents the meaning of purity, which can purify defilements, filth, and dry and hot troubles; while offering incense to the Buddha means eliminating the troubles of life and death and achieving purity and freedom.Incense represents "faith", "faith", and at the same time represents "precepts and concentration". You see, the true fragrance of precepts and concentration in the incense praises means this meaning. If you see or smell this fragrance, you will think: I want to practice precepts,I want to observe the precepts, I want to cultivate concentration, and I must firmly believe in the teachings of Buddha, which means this.
In addition to offering to Buddha, incense should also be solemn with various wonderful fragrances. In Volume 15 of the "Avatamsaka Sutra of the Great Blessing Buddha", it is also recorded that practitioners dedicate their good roots to offer to all Buddhas, and use infinite incense covers, infinite incense banners, infinite incense banners, infinite incense palaces, infinite incense nets, and infinite incense statues., infinite fragrance light, infinite fragrance flame, infinite fragrance cloud, infinite fragrance seat, infinite fragrance wheel, infinite fragrance residence, infinite fragrance Buddha world, infinite fragrance Mount Sumeru King, infinite fragrance sea, infinite fragrance river, infinite fragrance trees, infinite fragrance clothes,The infinite fragrances and lotus flowers are solemnly decorated with countless incenses such as these, and are considered as offerings.
In addition to the tangible fragrance, the sutra also uses the incense of the heart to offer the Buddha to the Buddha as a metaphor for sincere offerings. The offering of the incense of the heart is often called "a petal of the incense of the heart".When offering the Buddha with the incense of the heart, we might as well calm our body and mind, so that the incense of the heart will become a quiet and profound meeting between us and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
Incense supply should be given with certain methods and rituals. There are many methods and contents of incense offering. Each sutra and treatise records. Combined with the incense offering methods in various classical rituals, we believe that incense should be offered in the following ways.
Before offering incense, wash your hands, rinse your mouth, correct your clothes and your body and mind, and be quiet and stable. This is to purify the body and mind. Before the Buddha, Bodhisattva and the Holy Images of the Deity, respectfully put their hands together, observe the Buddhist light and holy images in their eyes, contemplate the great merits of the Buddha and the sages, and offer them sincerely, just like the Buddha and Bodhisattvas are now in front of them. This is offering to the Buddha.
Then, we pick up the fragrance we offer and burn the fragrance to our chests.Reciting the "Vajra Incense Bodhisattva Mantra" is to recite the "Incense Burning Mantra".If someone specializes in offering sacrifices to a certain Buddha or Bodhisattva, you can recite in particular: I will invite Namo So-so Buddha with all my heart. For example, if you are sincerely invited, Namo’s teacher Shakyamuni Buddha; if you are sincerely invited, Namo Amitabha Buddha; if you are sincerely invited, Namo’s great compassionate Guanyin Bodhisattva.
The incense provider can visualize according to their own abilities, and give full attention to all the saints, release vast light, come to our eyes, accept our offerings, and enjoy them happily.
When burning incense, use your thumb and index finger to clamp the incense, close the other three fingers, raise the incense flat with your hands to your eyebrows, and visualize the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas appear in front of us and receive the incense offerings. If there are many people, turn the incense straight upwards to avoid burning others, and then walk three steps away from the Buddha statue, and raise the incense to visualize and worship the Buddha. When burning incense, it is better to use one branch. If you want to put three branches of incense, insert the incense in the middle (recite the mouth to offer to Buddha), insert the second branch of incense on the right (recite the mouth to offer to Buddha), and insert the third branch on the left (recite the mouth to offer to Buddha), insert the third branch on the left (recite the mouth to offer to Buddha), and insert the third branch on the left (recite the mouth to offer to Buddha).Recite offerings to monks) and put hands together (providing them to sentient beings, wishing that the fragrance of flowers will fill the ten directions of the realm, offerings to Buddhas, respecting the Dharma and all the sages).
After offering incense, you should recite the incense verse and visualize and pray to offer this incense to all Buddhas and sages in the ten directions. In the boundless world, you can all be used to stimulate all sentient beings and achieve supreme and perfect Bodhi together. The incense offering verse says:
May these fragrant flowers and clouds fill the ten directions.
Offer to Buddha and respect all the wise and sages.
In the boundless Buddha land, enjoyment is used as a Buddhist service.
All sentient beings have achieved Bodhi together.
Then we visualize the saints of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the ten directions, and happily accept offerings, and sentient beings are all settled in ultimate happiness, and then happily offer incense and place in the incense burner.
After the incense is released, we must respect the Buddha. We worship the Buddha with all our hearts and respectfully, strive to visualize the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as they are before, and think and remember them with all our hearts:
The nature of the ritual that can be polite and the nature of the ritual is incredible, the response and communication between the Tao is incredible.
My temple is like an imperial pearl, and my shadow appears.
We think that the self who can be polite and the saints we polite are all empty and silent in nature, so we can produce the Buddha entering me and I entering the Buddha's incredible state of inducing and intercourse with the Buddha's incredible sensory path. The Taoist field of our heart is like the Mani beads of Indra, which can appear in our hearts in the outer colors.
We put our hands together and pray to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas with one heart, and all wishes will naturally be fulfilled.
When dedicating, we can recite the following verses:
May this merit be popularized.
We and sentient beings all achieve Buddhahood together.
The above method of offering incense can be practiced as a ritual for worshiping Buddha and burning incense. Through sincere prayers when offering incense every day, you can not only fulfill your prayer wishes, but also use this to realize the deep meaning of incense.End and reach the state of liberation. At this time, we pray that the fragrance we offer will be transformed into countless and vast fragrance clouds, which will permeate the Dharma Realm, so that all Buddhas in the ten directions will be happy and that the lower part will be able to realize sentient beings.
Giving incense to Buddha has many merits, and there are discussions on the merits of offering incense in many Buddhist scriptures. In the scriptures, the main discussions on the merit of offering incense are:
1. Eliminate sins.Such as the "Uphisattva Precepts Sutra."The Eight Precepts and Fast Chapter says: "Good man! If you can take refuge in the Eight Precepts in this way, you will eliminate the five sins of rebellion and even the rest of the sins."
2. Great blessings. The Sutra of Upayi falling into the Sakya Sutra says: "A person who has a six-day fast is like a sea water that cannot be measured. If he fasts for one day and one night, his blessings are incalculable."
3. The next world is noble. The Sutra of Establishing a House and House says: "As long as you observe the Eight Precepts once, you will not be reborn in suffering such as swords and wars and famines."
4. What you want is what you want."Addha Sutra"Gao Bao Pin says: "If there is a good man or a good woman who has completed the eight precepts and wants to be reborn in the four kings and heaven, he will also obtain this wish. Those who keep the precepts will receive it. If you want to be a shravaka, a pratyekabuddha, or a BuddhaThose who ride on the vehicle will fulfill their wishes.”
5. Stay away from the evil realms and gradually gain liberation. The Ten Good Precepts Sutra says: "If you keep this merit of fasting, you will not fall into hungry ghosts, you will not fall into animals, you will not fall into Asuras, you will always be born in humans, you will become a monk and attain the path of Nirvana; if you are born in heaven, you will always be born in Brahma,When the Buddha is born, please turn the Dharma wheel.”
Not only does it have great merit to offer pure fragrance, but even if you offer the fragrance of a flower, you can gain immeasurable merit. The Lotus Sutra says: "If a person is distracted and even offers a flower to the portrait, he will gradually see countless Buddhas." This means that if someone offers a flower in front of the Buddha's portrait with a distracted mind, he will use this merit. You can also gradually encounter countless people.
